Most wine clubs send you a box on a schedule. Naked Wines does something stranger. You put money into your own account every month, and the company uses that money to fund independent winemakers. You then spend it on their wines whenever you like. That model can be a great deal or a quiet trap, depending on how you drink. Here is how it actually works, what it costs, and who should skip it.

How does Naked Wines work?
Naked calls its members Angels. As an Angel, you pay a set amount into your Naked account every month. The standard amount is $40. That money is yours to spend on wine, and while it sits there, Naked uses it to back winemaking projects.
When you want wine, you build an order from the site. Orders need at least six bottles. You pay from your balance, and Naked ships the wine to your door.
This is the key difference from a classic club. Nobody picks the wine for you unless you ask them to. Naked also runs an optional auto-shipping service called Wine Genie, which you can delay, skip or cancel from your account.
What does Naked Wines cost?
There are three separate costs, and it helps to keep them apart.
The monthly deposit. $40 a month by default. Naked’s help center says you can lower it, and it offers payment holidays of up to three months. This is not a fee. It is credit for your own future orders.
The wine itself. Naked says Angels pay up to 60% less than what it calls the market price. That comparison is the company’s own, and we have not been able to check it independently. The starter cases give you a real price to judge by: a 12-bottle case lists at $189.99, which works out to about $15.83 a bottle before any discount.
Shipping. In the mainland US, delivery is included when you spend $200 of your own money. The $100 intro voucher does not count toward that. Below $200, Naked charges shipping, and the amount depends on your order and your state. Naked shows the cost before you pay. Alaska costs a fixed $130 per package and Hawaii $70.
Is the $100 intro offer worth it?
It is a good price, with one thing to watch. The offer takes $100 off your first case, so a 12-bottle starter case drops from $189.99 to $89.99. That is about $7.50 a bottle.
The catch is shipping. Because voucher money does not count toward the $200 free delivery threshold, your discounted first case will likely carry a shipping charge. Check the total at checkout, not the headline price.
The offer is separate from your monthly deposit. It is a one-time welcome discount for new members.
What do Angels get?
According to Naked’s help center, Angels get:
- Angel-only prices on the wines
- A gift bottle each month they order a case
- Access to Angel-only wines and groups
- Invites to Angel-only tastings with the winemakers
- A priority customer service line
One detail is worth knowing about the gift bottle. Naked’s own terms say its value is included in the price of your purchase and spread across the other wines in the order. To get it, you add 11 other bottles, so it arrives in a 12-bottle order. It is a nice touch, but it is not free wine in the usual sense.
The honest drawbacks
Your money becomes store credit. Naked’s help center says any unspent balance stays in your account after you cancel. It does not describe paying that balance back as cash. If you might want the money back later, ask Naked’s support team before you start depositing.
You are prepaying a company that is getting smaller on purpose. Naked Wines plc reported revenue down 20% to £199.1 million for its latest financial year, and it expects both revenue and member numbers to keep falling as it cuts back to a more profitable core. The same results showed adjusted profit up and net cash of £33.4 million, so this is a company shrinking by design, not one in obvious trouble. Still, you are handing money over in advance, and that is worth knowing.
Small orders cost more to ship. Free delivery starts at $200 of your own money. If you like to order six bottles at a time, shipping will often be part of the price.
It does not reach every state. Naked cannot ship to Delaware, New Jersey, Rhode Island or Utah, or to some dry areas elsewhere.
It takes some effort. The model rewards people who browse, rate and choose. If you want a box to simply show up, a curated club fits better.
What if you do not like a wine?
Naked has a simple guarantee. Rate a wine with a thumbs down, or email the team, and Naked adds a credit to your account for that bottle. The help center says the credit should appear within two business days.
Note the word credit. You get money to spend on another Naked wine, not a refund to your card. Refunds to your card are described for a different case: canceling an order before it ships, or refusing a delivery so it goes back to the warehouse.
How to cancel Naked Wines
- Log in to your account on the website.
- Go to My Subscriptions.
- Choose your Angel membership and follow the cancel steps.
- Cancel any other subscriptions, such as Wine Genie, separately. They do not end with the Angel membership.

Choose Naked Wines if you drink wine most weeks, you are happy ordering at least six bottles at a time, and you enjoy picking bottles yourself. The deposit model works best when your balance never sits idle for long.
Skip Naked Wines if you drink only now and then, you want someone else to choose, or you would be uneasy leaving money as credit with one retailer. A club that bills per shipment will suit you better.
